Ingredients for Cocoa Cookies (Kakaolu Kurabiye)

  • 1/2 water glass (about 200 ml / 3/4 cup + 1 tbsp) vegetable oil
  • 1 water glass (about 200 ml / 3/4 cup + 1 tbsp) powdered sugar
  • 1/2 water glass granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 egg yolk and white (separate egg)
  • 1 packet vanilla
  • 2.5 water glasses flour
  • 1 packet baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 5 tablespoons cocoa powder

How to Make Cocoa Cookies (Kakaolu Kurabiye)

In a bowl, knead together 1/2 water glass (about 100 ml / 1/3 cup + 1 tbsp) vegetable oil, 1 water glass powdered sugar, 1/2 water glass granulated sugar, 1 egg plus 1 extra egg yolk, 1 packet vanilla, 2.5 water glasses flour, 1 packet baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Set aside a small, tangerine-sized piece of the dough. Add 5 tablespoons of cocoa powder to the remaining dough and knead until combined, then roll into round balls and arrange on a baking tray. Shape the reserved white dough into small rounds and press down the centers with your finger. If you like, you can create different shapes as shown in the photo. Beat the reserved egg white and brush it over the cookies. Bake in an oven preheated to 190°C (375°F) until the tops are golden.

About This Recipe

Cocoa is a high-calorie yet very nutritious food, composed of approximately 40% carbohydrates, 22% fat, and 18% protein. Like coffee, it contains caffeine, which has a stimulating effect on the brain and nervous system. Cocoa also contains a compound called theobromine, which acts as a diuretic and helps the body expel harmful toxins. It also has anti-inflammatory properties.

Cacao trees are most widely cultivated in the tropical regions of the Americas, in West Africa — including Ghana and Nigeria — and in South American countries such as Brazil, Ecuador, Venezuela, the Antilles, and Mexico. The cacao tree thrives in warm climates. It produces almond-shaped pods from which a flour used to make chocolate is derived. It is one of the primary sources of income for many tropical countries.
