İzmir Köfte is a beloved regional dish first made by the Greeks of İzmir. Tender köfte (Turkish meatballs) and golden fried potatoes are baked together in a sweet tomato sauce — don't miss this delicious recipe!
How to Make İzmir Köfte (İzmir-Style Turkish Meatballs)
Grate 5 tomatoes into a saucepan. Add 3 sugar cubes, 1/2 tea glass (about 50 ml / 3 tbsp + 1 tsp) of vegetable oil, and 1 teaspoon of salt, then cook over medium heat.
Peel, rinse, and dry 4 potatoes. Slice them into rounds, then fry in a generously oiled pan until golden.
Grate 1 onion into 300 g (about 10.5 oz) of ground meat and chop 1 handful of parsley. Add 1 egg, 3 slices of soaked bread (crumb only), salt, and black pepper, then knead to combine. Shape the mixture into elongated köfte and fry them in the same oil-generously pan used for the potatoes.
Arrange a layer of potato rounds on the bottom of a baking tray and sprinkle with a pinch of salt. Place the köfte on top and pour the prepared tomato sauce over everything. Bake in an oven preheated to 200°C (390°F) for 10 minutes. Enjoy!
