Ingredients for Cornmeal-Crusted Horse Mackerel

  • 500 g (about 1 lb) horse mackerel
  • 2 tablespoons cornmeal
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • Vegetable oil for frying

How to Make Cornmeal-Crusted Horse Mackerel

We clean, rinse, and drain 500 g (about 1 lb) of horse mackerel. We sprinkle a little salt over them. On a plate, we combine 2 tablespoons of cornmeal and 1 tablespoon of flour and mix well. We coat each fish one by one in this mixture. We drizzle a very small amount of oil into a pan and arrange the fish tightly side by side along the edges of the pan. Once golden, we flip them over using a lid. We add a little more vegetable oil and once golden again, we serve with arugula.

About This Recipe

Horse mackerel, which has around 15 species found in waters across the world, is a large and fast-moving fish. The majority of fish caught — especially during the winter months — are horse mackerel. Because they travel in schools, they are easy to catch in large quantities. Horse mackerel can be enjoyed in many different ways, from baked and steamed to fried, and it holds a place not only in our local cuisine but in kitchens around the world.

Horse mackerel is especially recommended for women, as it helps regulate hormonal balance. It is beneficial for many neurological conditions. By adding elasticity to blood vessels, it is highly beneficial for blood circulation. Rich in vitamins A, B2, B6, C, and B12, horse mackerel also fights cancer thanks to its selenium content. It is recommended to consume it twice a week during fishing season. It supports the immune system and provides strength to the body.
