Ingredients for Mackerel Balls (Uskumru Topları)

  • 1 whole mackerel
  • 3 potatoes
  • 1 dry onion
  • 1 handful parsley
  • Half a lemon
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 dessert spoon (about 2 tsp) Aleppo pepper flakes
  • ½ dessert spoon (about 1 tsp) salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

How to Make Mackerel Balls (Uskumru Topları)

Clean and rinse 1 whole mackerel. Boil it in a pot of salted water for 10 minutes. Once boiled and cooled slightly, shred the flesh into a bowl. Grate the 3 boiled potatoes over the fish. Finely chop 1 dry onion. Chop 1 handful of parsley and squeeze in half a lemon. Add 1 dessert spoon (about 2 tsp) of Aleppo pepper flakes, ½ dessert spoon (about 1 tsp) of salt, ½ teaspoon of black pepper, and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil, then knead everything together. Take portions about the size of a mandarin orange and shape them into balls. You can serve them nestled in lettuce leaves.
