This little yellow miracle of nature is packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and beneficial compounds, giving it both preventive and healing properties against many illnesses. We couldn't resist — we decided to get to know this fruit up close and share what we found.
First, we wanted to answer the questions: what is bitter melon (kudret narı), and where does it come from? Bitter melon — our country's one-of-a-kind "wonder apple" — is a type of climbing vine plant. Its homeland is India. This tropical fruit grows naturally in almost every region of East Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean islands, while in South America and the Far East it is cultivated specifically by individuals for use as food and medicine. In Turkey, it is grown in the cities of Bursa and Yalova in the Marmara region. When not yet ripe it is green, looking just like a cucumber. As it ripens, it turns yellow. The red seeds found inside are toxic and quite harmful. In summer the fruit can be consumed fresh, and bitter melon paste and bitter melon oil can also be made using the seeds.
Below, we answer the questions of what the benefits of this powerful fruit are and how we can prepare and consume it at home. Here we go;
Bitter melon can be prepared and consumed for its healing properties in two ways.
Preparing with honey:
Ingredients;
1 large ripe bitter melon
Half a jar of raw honey
Glass jar
Preparation;
Mash the bitter melon well until it becomes a pulp. Mix with half a jar of raw honey in a glass jar, and consume on an empty stomach 1 hour before meals.
Preparing with olive oil:
Ingredients;
1 large ripe bitter melon
Half a liter (about 2 cups) of pure olive oil
Glass jar or bottle
Preparation;
Remove the seeds from the ripe bitter melon. Pour half a liter of pure olive oil into a glass jar and place the bitter melon inside. After a while, the bitter melon will begin to dissolve in the olive oil and become more potent.
You can consume this mixture either before meals or along with meals.
