About This Recipe
Cucumbers are made up of 95% water, yet they are also a great source of minerals and vitamins. Cucumbers contain vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, and C, as well as Folic Acid, Iron, Calcium, Zinc, Magnesium, Phosphorus, and Potassium. Cucumbers are also said to contain the lignans lariciresinol, pinoresinol, and secoisolariciresinol. These lignans are known to help prevent the development of certain cancers, including breast cancer, ovarian cancer, colon cancer, and prostate cancer.
Quick Facts About Cucumbers;
*The history of the cucumber is very ancient. India was the first to cultivate cucumbers, as far back as the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC.
*Holding a small slice of cucumber in your mouth for 30 seconds can eliminate bad breath and kill bacteria that cause oral health issues, leaving your mouth clean.
*Sliced or pureed cucumber provides instant relief from sunburn.
*It is said that in 1494, Christopher Columbus brought cucumbers to Haiti and began distributing them throughout the "New World."
*Cucumber is effective in reducing eye puffiness. Ascorbic and caffeic acids lower water retention, reducing swelling and puffiness.
*British grower David Thomas grew the world's heaviest cucumber — in 2015, at the Malvern Autumn Show in Worcestershire, England, he grew a cucumber weighing 12.9 kg (about 28.4 lbs).
*Experts have also shed light on those cat and cucumber videos that keep popping up on the internet… Animal behavior specialist Dr. Roger Mugford explained that "the reaction stems from the novelty of an unfamiliar object being secretly placed near them while their heads are in their food bowls." So it actually has nothing to do with cucumbers specifically :)
