Cardiovascular diseases are a chronic condition that has been occurring with increasing frequency in recent years and ranks among the leading causes of death in Turkey, as it does worldwide. Unfortunately, it is now appearing even at very young ages. Factors such as physical inactivity, poor nutrition, stress, and smoking — all accompanying changing lifestyle conditions — significantly increase the risk of heart disease. Sofra/Compass Group Turkey Country Dietitian Emel Terzioğlu Arslan says that, as with many other illnesses, it is possible to significantly reduce the risk of heart disease through a healthy diet. Certain foods in particular provide great support in protecting our hearts.

Healthy eating is one of the key factors to consider for a healthy heart. Many foods, beyond simply being filling, support our heart health through abilities such as cleansing the arteries and lowering blood pressure. Dietitian Emel Terzioğlu Arslan highlights the importance of adding heart-friendly foods to our diet.

Garlic reduces the risk of arterial blockage

Garlic reduces the risk of arterial blockage by preventing clotting inside blood vessels. It is also effective in lowering blood pressure and blood lipids, which are among the important factors that increase the risk of heart disease.

Fatty fish, thanks to the omega-3 they contain, lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood, thereby preventing arterial blockages. They also help regulate heart rhythm. Walnuts, like fatty fish, are a great source of omega-3. Their high polyphenol content also plays an important role in protecting against heart disease.

Oats protect heart health

Oats protect heart health by lowering LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol levels through the fiber they contain. Their beta-glucan content also strengthens the immune system. The polyphenolic compounds in green tea help prevent clot formation while also aiding in lowering cholesterol. As a result, the risk of developing heart disease is reduced.

Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and kale increase arterial elasticity and thin the arterial walls, preventing restricted blood flow. This reduces the risk of a heart attack. Their high fiber content also produces a cholesterol-lowering effect.

The miracle of hazelnuts and olive oil

Hazelnuts and olive oil regulate blood pressure and prevent arterial stiffness thanks to their omega-9 (oleic acid) content.

Tomatoes, meanwhile, have an antioxidant effect through the lycopene they contain. Their fiber, potassium, and vitamin C content also make tomatoes a protective food for heart health.
