History of Medicine Day (March 14)
Today we celebrate Medicine Day. But do we know its history? The truth about March 14 Medicine Day from the Ottoman era to the present day is in our article. Come on in...

March 14 is a day of remembrance and celebration during which the service issues of those working in the field of medicine are discussed, and individuals or organizations that contribute to science are honored...
During the reign of Sultan Mahmud II, upon the recommendation of Chief Physician Mustafa Behçet, the first school of surgery — Tıphane-i Amire ve Cerrahhane-i Amire (Imperial School of Medicine and Surgery) — was established. Its founding date, March 14, 1827, has been recognized as "Medicine Day." The first celebration of this day took place on March 14, 1919, while Istanbul was under occupation. Led by third-year medical student Hikmet Boran, all of the school's medical students gathered to protest the occupation, and prominent doctors of the era — Dr. Fevzi Pasha, Dr. Besim Ömer Pasha, and Dr. Akil Muhtar (Özden) — also participated.

Between 1929 and 1937, Medicine Day was celebrated in Bursa at the Yıldırım Bayezit Darüşşifası (hospital) on May 12, the date when the first Turkish-language medical education began. After 1937, it returned to being celebrated on March 14.
Since 1976, celebrations have extended beyond just March 14 to encompass the entire week containing March 14, which is now recognized as "Medicine Week." During the week of March 14, our healthcare workers draw attention to the country's health issues, solutions to those problems, and their own professional rights. They also try to shake off the fatigue of the entire year at the Medicine Ball, where they come together.
