Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özgür Karacan, a Pulmonology Specialist at Nişantaşı Hospital, stated that a strong immune system is effective in protecting against the virus, and recommended regular sleep, a balanced diet, and exercise.

Prepare your immune system against the risk of coronavirus

The rapid spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak is causing concern worldwide. Although cases in Turkey were only recently reported, the cases in our neighboring countries Iran, Iraq, Georgia, and Greece, as well as across European countries, reveal the scale of the danger. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özgür Karacan made a statement regarding the virus, for which vaccine development is ongoing and no definitive treatment yet exists. Karacan noted that wearing a mask offers no protection for people who are not sick, and drew attention to the importance of strengthening the immune system. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Karacan clarified the topics the public is curious about with the following statements:

Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds:

The most important precaution against illness is washing your hands frequently throughout the day, carefully and for at least 20 seconds. When water and soap are not available, antiseptics containing 60% alcohol or more are helpful. No special products are necessary.

Vitamin C against infection:

Vitamin C can generally help reduce complaints during viral infections.

Vitamin C and immune health

Strengthen your immune system:

The three most important factors for boosting the immune system are: at least 7–8 hours of uninterrupted sleep, a balanced diet, and moderate exercise.

Take vitamin D:

Since we get less sunlight in winter, our bodies may become deficient in vitamin D. In such a case, taking two thousand units of vitamin D per day is beneficial. Another option is to divide a 50,000-unit dropper bottle into two or three doses. These doses provide long-lasting protection.

Pay attention to salt levels:

Drawing excessively salty water into the nose can damage the beneficial organisms in the nose, mouth, and throat, and may harm the delicate structures known as mucous membranes. You can rinse your nose with clean water or mildly salted water (three teaspoons of salt in half a liter of clean water).
Nasal rinsing for health

Only sick individuals should wear masks:

Masks are important only to prevent sick individuals from spreading germs. We do not recommend that healthy individuals wear masks. The disease can also be transmitted through eye contact, so ordinary masks do not provide protection — wearing a mask does not guarantee that you won't catch the virus.

Kelle Paça (head and trotter soup) does not protect against the virus:

The claim that foods such as kelle paça (head and trotter soup), kokoreç (grilled offal), and similar dishes are good for the illness or provide protection is not accurate.

You cannot catch the virus through e-commerce:

You cannot be infected through products arriving via e-commerce from China, because the virus only survives on surfaces for a few hours.

Who is in the risk group?

  • Individuals over 50 years of age.
  • Patients with chronic lung and heart conditions
  • Those with permanent organ disease (kidney, liver)
  • Those using immunosuppressive medications (cancer patients, those with rheumatic diseases)
  • Those who travel abroad frequently
