The clove spice, derived from the Syzygium aromaticum tree, belongs to the Myrtaceae family. Used by Chinese emperors and ancient Romans alike, this remarkable spice was once considered as valuable as gold. It appears to have lost none of that value today. Thanks to the tannins, flavonoids, triterpenoids, and essential oils it contains, cloves possess antioxidant, antiseptic, local anesthetic, anti-inflammatory, calming, and carminative (gas-relieving) properties. Because it contains essential oils such as eugenol, it has a sweet, aromatic scent and flavor. Due to its anesthetic and antiseptic properties, this prized spice is frequently used in oral and dental health. If you want fresh breath, you can try putting a few cloves in your mouth.

Cloves are equally helpful for digestion. Consuming cloves with or after meals helps you digest food by increasing intestinal motility and the release of digestive enzymes. If you suffer from serious indigestion after meals or chronic constipation, you will find great benefit in consuming cloves regularly.

This miraculous spice contains minerals such as potassium, manganese, iron, selenium, and magnesium, as well as vitamin A and beta-carotene. The antioxidants and flavonoids it contains help strengthen your immune system while also helping to protect you against various types of cancer such as lung and oral cancer. Rich in vitamin K, vitamin B6, vitamin B1, vitamin B3, and vitamin C, this spice also supports the elimination of free radicals that could damage your cells. This wonderful spice also helps balance blood sugar levels and reduce sugar cravings — you can support your health by incorporating it into your daily diet.

You can use cloves in your savory dishes and desserts, or add them to beverages such as tea, coffee, or water. Those who have difficulty drinking water due to its plain taste can make it easier by dropping 1–2 cloves into their glass. In the morning, preparing a mixture of 500 ml of water with boiling water, 3–4 cloves, and 2–3 slices of lemon or orange, then consuming it on an empty stomach once it reaches room temperature, will help maintain your blood sugar balance throughout the day, ease digestive issues, detoxify your body, and curb sugar cravings.

The amount of cloves consumed is of great importance. Consuming too many cloves in food can cause gastrointestinal discomfort and central nervous system disorders. I especially advise those with conditions such as stomach ulcers, acid reflux, gastritis, ulcerative colitis, and diverticulitis not to consume this spice, as it may worsen the symptoms of these conditions. We strongly recommend that pregnant women avoid chewing clove spice, as it may lead to miscarriage or bleeding. Adult individuals should take care not to consume more than 2–5 grams of cloves per day.
