Of course, everyone wants to live long and stay young. Our genetic heritage can take us so far — but what about the rest? That's where how you eat and how you take care of your body comes into play. Without a doubt, our diet plays a vital role in both extending our lifespan and helping us look younger by preserving our skin health. Remember: a healthy person has healthy skin.

Natural foods containing antioxidants, anti-inflammatory compounds, phytochemicals, and polyphenols strengthen the metabolism and positively impact skin health as well. Here, we go through the most important of these foods one by one...

TURKISH COFFEE

We naturally begin our article with Turkish coffee, which many of us consume every day. Experts say you should regularly drink unsweetened Turkish coffee every day — without overdoing it, of course; one cup a day is enough. Women who regularly drink Turkish coffee have a lower risk of skin cancer compared to those who don't. Coffee beans also contain antioxidants, which help your skin glow and keep your blood sugar balanced.

TOMATO

Its importance for skin health is so great that, if water is our primary life source, tomato could be considered the second. Tomatoes are packed with lycopene, the antioxidant that skin loves most. Tomatoes also contain salicylic acid, which prevents breakouts on the skin. When consumed regularly, these beneficial compounds penetrate the body. If your skin is dry, it gets moisturized; if it's oily, the moisture is balanced — leaving you with smooth, healthy skin.

WALNUT

The Omega-3 found in walnuts benefits everything from your skin to your mind. Experts recommend consuming 4–5 walnuts regularly every day. Thanks to their fatty acid content, walnuts increase skin elasticity and slow down aging, resulting in smoother, more radiant skin.

OLIVE OIL

Olive oil is one of the foods with the highest vitamin E content. Vitamin E protects the skin from the harmful effects of the sun in summer and wind in winter. When consumed regularly, it protects the skin from inflammation, acne, skin cancer, and rosacea. Thanks to its monounsaturated fatty acids and antioxidant polyphenol compounds, it slows down the aging process.

GARLIC

The beauty benefits of garlic are endless, but its anti-aging properties are perhaps the least well known. The powerful antioxidants it contains reduce the development of free radicals in the skin, keeping it firm and youthful. The sulfur in garlic also supports collagen production in the body, helping to fight wrinkles.

CARROT

This vitamin A-packed vegetable should be consumed in abundance for healthy, radiant, and vibrant skin. While carrots are widely celebrated for their benefits to eye health, their skin benefits — thanks to the antioxidants they contain — are far less known. Carrots help maintain the skin's pH balance, keeping it mildly acidic and protective. The healthy chemical composition of skin is slightly acidic, which helps eliminate bacteria on the skin. While drinking water alone can help your skin to a degree, you can maintain the ideal pH balance of 5.4 to 5.9 with the help of carrots.

AVOCADO

Avocado is a high-fat food that helps moisturize and soften the skin. Its fatty acids quickly penetrate beneath the skin's surface to prevent any moisture loss. Eating avocado regularly keeps your skin hydrated and gives it a healthy glow.

RED FRUITS

Red fruits such as red grapes, strawberries, cherries, damson plums, cranberries, and raspberries all serve as the best antioxidants for our skin. These antioxidants rejuvenate the skin, benefit the body's overall health, and also fight disease. If you've noticed, almost every detox drink includes red fruits. About 85% of red fruits is water, with the remaining 15% made up of fiber.

Broccoli is an extremely beneficial vegetable for the skin. It promotes rapid skin renewal and helps keep skin moisturized. It is particularly effective against dry skin.

DARK CHOCOLATE

The flavanols and antioxidant properties found in cocoa moisturize the skin and regulate blood circulation. Consuming dark chocolate regularly at 28 g (about 1 oz) / 150 calories per day helps prevent skin flaking and smooths out any rough patches.

SALMON

Salmon contains astaxanthin, a type of carotenoid that increases skin elasticity. Taking this compound regularly means fewer fine lines on your skin. Salmon is also very rich in minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, iron, and selenium, as well as vitamins A, B, and D — all essential for healthy, glowing skin. GREEN TEA

Green tea is considered the richest source of antioxidants. Thanks to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, it firms the skin and slows aging. Green tea is especially effective at improving skin elasticity against the problems of wrinkle formation and skin sagging.

WATER

Drinking water on an empty stomach in the morning is very beneficial for both our organs and our skin. While giving your organs a morning shower, you also nourish and hydrate your skin from within. This moisture helps reduce wrinkles. We also need water to detoxify our body, which leaves the skin cleansed of toxins — healthier and more radiant.

Experts point out that we must consume at least 1.5–2 liters (about 6–8 cups) of water every day. Remember, water intake is the first door we open to good health.
