Kohlrabi: The New Star of the Market Stands
Kohlrabi (alabaş) has been showing up everywhere lately — and for good reason. Discover all the health benefits of kohlrabi, from cancer prevention to weight loss.

Kohlrabi (Alabaş) is the newest member of the cabbage family to make its way onto our tables. Until recently, it wasn't even grown in our country. Now gaining recognition in Turkey, this vegetable is known internationally as "kohlrabi" or "heaven's knob." The plant, which comes in white and green varieties, is packed with virtually every vitamin and mineral you can think of.
Its primary vitamins and minerals include: potassium, phosphorus, calcium, selenium, zinc, copper, and iron, as well as high levels of vitamins A, B, and C.
Best of all, this remarkable plant can be grown year-round. In Turkey, it is cultivated most widely in the Marmara and Black Sea regions, as well as in the Aegean city of İzmir. You can now easily find it at the produce sections of supermarkets and at neighborhood market stalls.

Can Too Much Kohlrabi Be Harmful?
As beneficial as kohlrabi is, consuming it in excess can also pose a risk to our health. After all, since this may be a plant you're trying for the first time, it's worth knowing about any potential downsides, isn't it?
By its nature, kohlrabi absorbs iodine from the human body, which can naturally lead to an iodine deficiency. For this reason, those who consume kohlrabi — especially if they also have a thyroid condition — should use iodized salt and avoid eating it more than twice a week. Too much of anything can be harmful, and we'll add: if you have a serious health condition or allergy, do not consume kohlrabi without first consulting your doctor.
Wishing you healthy days…
