Foods That Can Be Stored at Home for a Long Time
Due to the coronavirus, we are going out less — or not at all — and we want to stock our homes with foods that can be stored for a long time. So which foods are they?

The coronavirus outbreak, which originated in China and rapidly spread to Europe and all other continents in a short period of time, is profoundly affecting daily life in our country as well. In addition to the health problems it has caused, the coronavirus outbreak is also changing our eating habits and the way we obtain food products. In particular, going out less frequently — or not being able to go out at all — has made it necessary to stock homes with foods that can be stored for a long time. Generali Insurance, Turkey's first insurance company with a history spanning more than 150 years, has shared a list of long-lasting, non-perishable foods with the public.
Dried legumes as a nutritional powerhouse
Dried legumes, which can last a long time in emergency situations, top the list both in terms of durability and nutritional value. Dried legumes — including foods such as white beans, borlotti beans, and chickpeas — are recommended by experts as nutritious foods rich in carbohydrates and protein.

Satisfying varieties of rice
Rice, which has long been one of the most preferred foods in emergency situations, is known as a filling food even when consumed in small amounts. Within the diverse rice family, bulgur (cracked wheat) in particular stands out for its nutritional value and durability.
Pasta: nutritious and affordable
Pasta, a food enjoyed by almost everyone and very popular in our country, stands out for its high nutritional value, low calorie count, and affordable price. It is also a top choice for emergencies due to its ability to be stored for a long time without spoiling. Pasta contains vitamins A, B1, and B2, as well as iron, calcium, phosphorus, and potassium. Pasta also draws attention for being rich in carbohydrates.

Honey: a remedy for everything
Honey is the only food that does not spoil even as the years go by. Therefore, honey has its place among the foods that should be stocked in emergency situations. Although crystallization and color changes may be observed in honey when stored for a long time due to its nature, it always retains its antibiotic properties, energy-giving qualities, and flavor.
Lentils and tarhana
Lentils and tarhana (fermented grain-yogurt soup base) are among the foods with the highest nutritional value. In particular, green lentil dishes and tarhana soup strengthen individual immunity and provide protection against illness. These foods, which should be stocked in emergency situations, also stand out for being rich in protein.

Naturally acidic vinegar
Vinegar is a natural acid known for its sharp character. Used both for flavoring foods and for its effectiveness against bacteria, vinegar is among the foods that can be stored for a long time. When kept away from sunlight in a dry, moisture-free environment in a glass bottle or jar, it can stay fresh for a long time.
