Ingredients for Baked Köfte (Turkish Meatballs) with Potatoes

  • 300 g (about 10.5 oz) ground meat
  • 3 potatoes
  • 1 onion
  • 1 handful parsley
  • 1 egg
  • 2 slices soaked bread (crumb only)
  • 2 slices diced tomato
  • 3–4 long green peppers (sivri biber)
  • 1 tablespoon salça (Turkish tomato paste)
  • 2 water glasses (about 200 ml / 3/4 cup + 1 tbsp each) water
  • 1/2 tea glass (about 100 ml / 1/3 cup + 1 tbsp) vegetable oil
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Oregano

How to Make Baked Köfte (Turkish Meatballs) with Potatoes

Grate 1 onion into 300 g of ground meat and finely chop 1 handful of parsley. Add 1 egg, 2 slices of soaked bread crumb, salt, and black pepper, then knead everything together. Shape the mixture into round köfte (Turkish meatballs). Arrange 3 potatoes, sliced into rings, in a single layer on the bottom of a baking tray and sprinkle with a pinch of salt. Place the prepared köfte on top. Tuck 2 sliced tomatoes and 3–4 long green peppers (sivri biber), cut into strips, in between the köfte. In a bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of salça (Turkish tomato paste) with 2 water glasses of water and pour the mixture over the köfte, then drizzle with 1/2 tea glass of vegetable oil. Sprinkle with a little oregano and bake in a 200°C (390°F) oven until the potatoes are tender. Enjoy!

About This Recipe

How lucky we are that ancient inscriptions and tablets used the word "kuffette," meaning "pounded meat," and passed it down to us. Which civilizations, you ask? Central Asia and Mesopotamia — the regions from which köfte, now a staple in nearly every cuisine around the world, is widely accepted to have spread.

And how lucky we are for the stretch of land from Chile to Mexico, the coasts of Peru, and the Andes mountains — because they gave us the potato… that magnificent food, the savior of human history and the cradle of civilizations.

And today's recipe is the patron saint of all life-saving recipes…

We know you love both on their own. And now, in an equally wholesome form as our Potatoes in a Köfte Bowl recipe, we are delighted to present our Baked Köfte with Potatoes. Enjoy...
