Ingredients for Round Sandwich Rolls

  • 1 water glass (about 200 ml / 3/4 cup + 1 tbsp) milk
  • 10 g dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 50 g butter
  • Half a tea glass (about 50 ml / 3 tbsp + 1 tsp) vegetable oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 bottle sparkling water (soda)
  • 1 dessert spoon (about 2 tsp) salt
  • Flour, as much as needed
  • 1 egg yolk
  • Nigella seeds, for topping

How to Make Round Sandwich Rolls

In a bowl, combine 1 water glass (about 200 ml / 3/4 cup + 1 tbsp) of milk, 10 g of dry yeast, 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar, 50 g of butter, half a tea glass of vegetable oil, 2 eggs, 1 bottle of sparkling water, 1 dessert spoon of salt, and as much flour as needed, then knead into a dough. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let the dough rest for 2–3 hours. Transfer the rested dough to a floured surface and knead again. Pinch off tangerine-sized pieces of dough, roll them into balls by hand, and arrange them on a parchment-lined baking tray. Let them rest for another 20 minutes. Brush the tops with egg yolk, sprinkle with nigella seeds, and bake in a preheated oven at 190°C (375°F) until golden brown. Enjoy!

About This Recipe

Bread, with a history as old as civilization itself, is one of the oldest and most important foods known to humankind. According to one of the earliest accepted stories in the pages of history, after the discovery of fire, early humans noticed that pores formed in moistened wheat cracked and left to its own devices. When they cooked this porous mass on hot stones, they discovered that it tasted delicious.

According to one account, it was the ancient Egyptians who taught the Greeks how to bake bread. In Greece, and shortly after in the Roman Empire, bread became the staple food of the people. After the Romans had sustained themselves on "cooked wheat" for many years, they learned to make bread from the Greeks around 600 BC. It was then that the addition of beer yeast to traditional bread yeast was first discovered to produce a softer and more flavorful loaf. Leavened bread, which spread from Egypt to Rome and then to Western Europe, eventually found its place on tables all over the world. Later, when fat and eggs began to be added to bread, it took its place among luxury foods. For many years, white bread adorned the tables of the wealthy, while dark, bland loaves graced those of the poor. Today, the opposite is true — white bread is both easily accessible and very inexpensive.
