The human body cannot produce its own daily Vitamin C requirement on its own. For this reason, this vitally important nutrient must be obtained from external sources through various means. For those who want to avoid medication but still meet their Vitamin C needs, the orange is undoubtedly the first choice. Orange is one of the most effective sources of Vitamin C. It is known that for people without any health problems, the daily required amount of Vitamin C is between 50 and 70 milligrams. A medium-sized orange contains approximately 90 milligrams of Vitamin C — more than enough to meet the daily requirement. However, it should not be forgotten that smokers or those fighting infection-related immune system problems may need up to twice the normal daily amount of Vitamin C.
Orange is an excellent source of Vitamin C. It is a fruit belonging to the citrus group known as hesperidium. It is estimated that there are approximately 600 different varieties of oranges worldwide. One of the world's most valuable foods, the orange contains calcium, phosphorus, and citric acid, as well as a rich supply of potassium and certain antioxidant minerals. The orange, which thrives in temperate climates, is most widely cultivated along Turkey's Mediterranean coast. It is also grown in the Aegean and Black Sea regions; however, as the orange is quite sensitive to cold, it is adversely affected by frost the moment temperatures drop below freezing.
